GENERAL SUBSTITUTE TEACHING INFORMATION 

  • Eligible non-educators interested in working as substitute teachers in WV must complete an initial Substitute Teacher Training class as the first step toward becoming a substitute teacher. 
  • RESA 8 offers this training as a 2 day face-to-face interactive class.  The information provided on this page is about our RESA 8 Substitute Teacher Training class. 

  

RESA 8 SUBSTITUTE TEACHER TRAINING CLASS GENERAL INFORMATION

  • This is a 2 day face-to-face interactive class that is considered the first step toward becoming a substitute teacher in WV.
  • New and renewal candidates are welcome to attend any open class we offer.
  • All classes are held at the RESA 8 office in Martinsburg, WV unless otherwise noted.
  • Directions to our office (109 S. College Street) as well as a parking map can be found under “Related Documents” in the upper right hand corner of this page.
  • Free and metered parking is available around the RESA 8 office. Unfortunately, there is no guest parking in our (tiny!) RESA 8 lot. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause!
  • Classes are held from 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM with sign in beginning at 8:00 each day. (Our office doesn't open until 8:00 so you may not be able to enter prior to 8:00.)
  • All participants must attend full sessions both days to receive a certificate of completion.
  • The non-refundable registration fee is $150.00 and must be paid with your registration in order to hold a spot for you in an upcoming class. Payment may be made by mailing in a check or money order with your initialed, signed (may not be computer generated), and completed registration form, or you may scan and email (mgacquino@k12.wv.us) or fax (304.267.3599) your completed registration and then call to make payment with a credit card (M-F, 8 AM-3:30 PM). Payment cannot be accepted unless your registration form is initialed and signed, and we can't hold your seat in the class without receipt of payment.
  • A 1-hour lunch is on your own each day.  There are many restaurants within walking distance from our office (Habanero Grill, Boyd’s Steakhouse, Blue & White Grill, Peking, Mugs and Muffins, etc.) and many more within a short drive (Ruby Tuesdays, Applebee’s, Chili’s, Olive Garden, Buffalo Wild Wings, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, The Daily Grind, Panera, Chick Fil A, Arby’s, etc.) If a class is held at another location, we will provide information about lunch options with your registration confirmation.
  • You are welcome to bring your own drinks, K-cups and lunch; we have a Keurig coffee maker and refrigerator available in our conference room. Unfortunately, we do not have a microwave.

 

CLASS CAPACITY / WAITING LIST

  • Due to space limitations, a maximum of 25 participants will be accepted for each class held at the RESA 8 office. (Classes held at other locations may be able to accommodate more participants.)
  • If we reach capacity for a class, the website will be updated, and we will begin taking names for the wait list in case there are cancellations.
  • If you are unable to attend an open class or if no class is currently scheduled and you would like to be placed on the wait list now, please send an email to Melissa Acquino at mgacquino@k12.wv.us.  This email should include your name, phone number, county of residence, other counties you are interested in subbing in, and whether you are a new or renewal candidate. Melissa will contact you as soon as a new class is scheduled.

  

ELIGIBILITY for the RESA 8 SUBSTITUTE TEACHER TRAINING CLASS

 

For NEW CANDIDATES:  Anyone who meets all of the criteria below and has an interest in becoming a substitute teacher in WV may sign up to take our RESA 8 Substitute Teacher Training class: 

  • Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 as shown on an official transcript
  • Believe you have what it takes to manage a classroom and be a positive role model for students
  • Have the ability to pass a background check

(You do NOT need to provide us with transcripts to sign up for the class nor should you go out and be fingerprinted prior to taking the class.)

 

For RENEWAL CANDIDATES:  You are welcome to attend any of our upcoming RESA 8 Substitute Teacher Training classes to meet your renewal requirement.  You may also complete 12 hours of related professional development hours if approved by your county. (See your county Human Resources Director to see if this is an option for you.) 

Please note that you are only considered a renewal candidate if your current official WV Substitute Teaching Permit issued by the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) has not expired. (Permits expire on 6/30 of the expiring year.)

 

UNDERSTANDING THE ROAD TO BECOMING A SUB IN WV

 

1. Completion of the Substitute Teacher Training class is STEP ONE to becoming a sub. (You may not go out and sub right after completing the class! There are several more steps required! See below!!!)

2. At the conclusion of our RESA 8 Substitute Teacher Training class, you will receive a RESA 8 Certificate of Completion showing the dates you took the class and confirming that you completed it. This is NOT a license to sub. It is a document needed as part of your application that will be submitted to the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) with your application for an official WV Substitute Teaching Permit when the time comes, so hang on to it. 

3. New candidates must complete and document observation hours that are also submitted as part of your application for an official WV Substitute Teaching Permit with West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) when the time comes. Observation requirements will be explained in the class and the appropriate forms will be provided to you at that time. (Observations must occur AFTER the 2-day class.)

4. All candidates interested in working in a school as a sub must apply for open positions in the county/counties of interest and be hired before they can work. (We will cover the process for applying for jobs during the class.)

5. Once you have been hired as a sub, your hiring county will assist you in completing your application for an official WV Substitute Teaching Permit with the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE.)

6. Once you have been hired by a county AND obtained your official WV Substitute Teaching Permit with the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) you will be able to work as a substitute teacher only in the county that has hired you.

7. It is your responsibility to maintain eligibility for renewal of your official WV Substitute Teaching Permit with the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) and to meet the requirements of renewal in order to maintain it.

8. PLEASE NOTE: If you have not been hired and have not obtained your official WV Substitute Teaching Permit with the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) within 1 year of completing the RESA 8 Substitute Teacher Training class, your RESA 8 Certificate of Completion will expire, and you will have to retake the course in order to obtain eligibility again. (This will be discussed in the class as well.) 

 

 

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

Q:     I’m not sure if I’m ready to be a sub; can I take the class just to find out more about it? 

A:     Of course. Our goal is to provide you with the best information/training we can to help you to be a quality sub if you decide you want to pursue open positions.

  

Q:     What is covered in this 2 day class? 

A:     Our class is taught by an experienced educator and covers a variety of topics including professional responsibilities, legal aspects, classroom management, instructional strategies, lesson planning, reading and literacy instruction, technology, special education, economic diversity, communication strategies, sexual harassment, certification and job application. Our class is designed to model various instructional strategies and total participation techniques throughout the two days while providing participants with a variety of tools that can be used in the classroom. Additionally, participants are given the chance to collaborate with others, complete hands-on activities, discuss real-life scenarios and engage in small group instructional practice.

 

Q:     Once I register for the RESA 8 Substitute Teacher Training class, what happens if I can’t make it? 

A:     Unfortunately, we can’t refund your registration fee. However, we are happy to transfer your registration to another upcoming class that better fits your schedule provided you give us advanced notice of the need to change your date.

 

Q:     I see that I need to be able to pass a background check as part of my eligibility. Should I go out and get my fingerprinting done right away? 

A:     No. Each county has their own process for new hires, and the process is specific when applying for a sub permit. In most counties, they will send you to get them done once they determine they want to hire you. (We go over these requirements by county in the class.)

 

Q:     Can I just use the fingerprinting I recently had done for another purpose to avoid having to have them done again for my sub permit application?

A:     No, unfortunately you will have to have them completed at the location selected by your county of hire with specific information required for the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE.)

 

Q:     How will I know when jobs are open and how to apply for them?

A:     Part of our class is dedicated to showing you where to look for jobs and reviewing the process for completing your application and actually applying for open positions.

 

Q:     Does taking this class guarantee I’ll get a job as a substitute teacher in WV? 

A:     No. This class is only the first step in the process. You will be given all the tools you need to apply for open positions, but RESA 8 doesn’t hire substitutes for the counties. It will be up to each county Human Resources Department to hire their chosen candidates.  We will do our best to prepare you to land a position, but we can’t guarantee you will be hired.

 

Q:     How long does it take to get hired by a county? 

A:     Substitute Teaching positions for each county are posted at various times during the school year and summer. Most job postings are open for a minimum of 5 days, but it is up to the county to determine how quickly they select candidates for interview and then for hire.  If you are not selected for an interview the first time you apply, watch for future openings and reapply.

  

Q:     How soon can I begin subbing once I’m hired? 

A:     Once you have been hired by a county and have submitted your application to the WVDE for your official WV Substitute Teaching Permit, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for the WVDE to process your paperwork approve your application. Your county Human Resources Department will let you know when you are good to go, 

 

Q:     Can I sub in more than one county? 

A:     You may sub for any WV county school system that hires you. So, yes, you can work in more than one county.

 

Q:     If I want to apply for multiple counties, do I have to reapply for my official WV Substitute Teacher permit or take the class again? 

A:     Once you obtain your official WV Substitute Teaching Permit with the West Virginia Department of Education, it is valid in all 55 counties of WV. (Just remember that you can only sub in counties that have hired you!)

 

Q:     Once I obtain my official WV Substitute Teaching Permit, how long is it valid?

A:     You must renew your official WV Substitute Teaching Permit with the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) every 3 years.

  

Q:     How do I renew my official WV Substitute Teaching Permit? 

A:     In order to be eligible to renew, you must either complete a RESA 8 Substitute Teacher Training course or the equivalent. In some cases, 12 clock hours of professional development hours of in-service training may be approved by your county of hire.  You should talk to your county HR Department to see if PD hours are an option.
