The Adult Education Coordinator conducts financial oversight; coordinates professional development sessions for Adult Basic Education (ABE) instructors; provides technical assistance where needed; serves on local, regional and state committees dealing with adult education and literacy; and assists county personnel with the supervision of Adult Basic Education classes.          

Adult Basic Education (ABE) is a vital link in the continuing educational process, serving adult students sixteen (16) years of age or older at all educational levels. These levels include GED preparation, basic skills upgrading, literacy development, English as a Second Language (ESL), and special topics classes.  The ABE program works closely with Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle, Inc. to address adult literacy needs in the region.        

Funding for Adult Basic Education flows to the local programs from the West Virginia Department of Education through a competitive grant process. In many instances, up to fifty percent (50%) of the county's ABE budget is funded with federal dollars, through the state. In addition to the regular and part-time ABE classes, several other adult education programs are incorporated in the RESA 8 adult education system, including Institutional Programs and SPOKES Career Readiness.
